The Autopian

"You should be aware of the people that will become your clients prior to establishing an organization that is based on membership" declares Matt Hardigree, publisher of The Autopian. "I have had issues where individuals simply believed there would be a subscriber base which is there. This is a mathematical issue, but it's not impossible. It's as easy as utilizing all the information that you've got."

If you're writing content for your website check out the amount of people who visit your website. "If you're on a website along with ten other writers, and we're all looking to create something, how do we have in common? Do we represent 15 percent of the website's users? It's not much. We are the ones that make up 80 percent of the website's visitors?"

In the past, The Autopian founders David Tracy and Jason Torchinsky made up 50 percent of Jalopnik's traffic. "They could have believed "We can start something and we can do it'" continues Matt. "What's interesting is David and Jason aren't renowned for having huge numbers of fans on their social media and this is the easiest method to convert them into readers. They weren't required to have it because they already had readers.

The Autopian

The days prior to the official launch The Autopian did a study of the landscape of competition within the automotive and media industries. "We know how many automobile fans visit various sites. Check out this scenario: once you've calculated the price that you want to pay, what do you going to require to be successful? Think about asking yourself: what country are these individuals of? and What percentage of them are aware of our identity What percentage of them are aware of our identity? And what percentage is required to meet the goal that will last And what percentage of them are aware? Regarding membership, what amount will we be able afford? ? '."

The article concludes: "You can make some assumption - however, you don't have to demonstrate it. But it's important to gather the relevant information. When you've got the data and have it, you'll be able include those points in the dataset and identify the areas which aren't right and make adjustments. If you don't have any information or have a guess that you're wrong, then you'll have to do mathematics to discover the correct answer.

Matt admits that once having completed your research, you'll have"in your head" feelings "In the initial one-half minute or so that I started my membership, I was a wreck! I thought, "What's going to happen? When the memberships began coming into the office, I was amazed! The team is still doing the analysis of information, and we're always looking at the things that are working well as well as the areas that don't."

Strategies for engagement and methods to grow

"I think we're only 10% of what we would need to have around 10"" Matt continues. "We've reached our targets and we've had lots of members. However, the initial 10 percent is the most easy to acquire. The last 10% of members are the most difficult. Each tranche will become more challenging than the previous one. "We'll have to think often."

Matt believes that 10x growth is certainly an achievable target for the next five years. "If we can reach 50 percent of what we need the organization is financially stable through members. If we are able to reach 100%, then we'll be much higher than the cost of membership or earning money by membership fees alone. It would be great for us to reach the goal."

What is their strategy to reach this goal? What benefits do they provide members in the form of benefits? And how will they make use of this in order in order to draw new members?

Matt replies: "It's a balance because The Autopian is a journalism project, in addition to being the project that is driven by enthusiasts. We view it as three distinct buckets which encourage members to join and also to join by making The Autopian feel valuable."

Strategy 1: Content

Matt says that the primary bucket is content. "We must create something that's good enough, exciting enough, and distinctive enough from other materials you can find in other places. It is only accessible in the Autopian. It is crucial to be a part of The Autopian if I want it to be a reality.'

The Autopian

"You're not paying for access to the content, as there's no paywalled access to it. This is because you want it to be available everywhere." Matt claims that content will continue to serve as the most important benefit "You want this to come into existence so urgently that you'll pay 4 dollars each month, 10 times per month or $85 monthly for some users."

Strategy 2: The Rewards

The Bucket 2 represents the goods the members receive, such as Discord access, clothing like T-shirts, tickets to trivia nights and other events and other things such as stickers or badges.

"We provide a wide range of goods that's similar to purchasing a vehicle. The cheapest comes cloth ($70/year) then vinyl ($100/year) and finally Velour, which costs $250 per year. At the top, the most expensive level is Corinthian leather, which is $1,000 annually. There are more people who utilize the leather and velour than I could like to imagine!"

"One of the things you'll get is a birthday greeting card: one of our co-founders is an artist. We hadn't anticipated receiving so many of them and He's been drawing a lot better birthday drawings than we expected. We're still learning about his personality!"

The monthly cost of $1000 may seem like a huge sum, however this was the advice of well-established media company Defector. Defector told Matt that they could find many more clients who would be able to spend the money they expected to. "I thought to myself"I don't even know how much is the total, what's much is $1,000?' They were like"Do that!" Matt smiles.

"They also said that they would like to have a middle tier stage because they are two lower levels in addition to a higher one." the manager says. "We considered it for a while before settling on $250/year. The amount was the right amount because we have a lot consisting of Velour members. This yearmore people shifted between velour and vinyl, and eventually to vinyl. Indeed, more had the ability to go from 100 to 250 than were able to move from 100-250. I think that means you're right!"

The Autopian

Autopian's Autopian team has also discovered that behind-the-scenes videos are popular. The team also posts procedural material which includes the method they employed to create the headline. They also offer "Tales of Slack". Matt states: "We have our internal Slack. It's clearly not intended to be used by the public."

"People tend to say ridiculous funny, absurd and ridiculous things!" Matt smiles. "Our Chief Editor David does not have an understanding of popular culture, so he's constantly having trouble getting things right. He was certain that Ronan was actually an Serpico film, and he believed that the famous Al Pacino movie set in the 70s wasn't actually the Robert de Niro film that was released during the 90s!"

Strategy 3. Fear of Losing Out (FOMO)

"The third content bucket which is very effective, but which frequently gets ignored is FOMO. People don't want to be missing out on important content," Matt continues.

"We offer a discord that has every day columns of tips and advice. The chat room is free and accessible with the option of joining," he adds. "I suggest that users share images in the general chatroom"Here's me wearing my shirt, I'm sporting my badge' and I hope that people will be eager to join in with us."

Matt mentions that recruiting members is an approach which could be extremely successful in the context of your type of content that you create. "Every once in a while, we'll run"Here's everything you'll get" to remind folks of the benefits that come with signing up."

The Autopian

In the near future, they'll recognize their communities by saying: "We love our commenters and that's why we're so great. If you're not able to join We understand. Certain people do not have enough money. If you're a student what ever that means is understandable. If you're struggling to afford the money, read. We're here for you and we'd love to make you an integral component of our family. If you're one of the fans of thing There's a way to join the community."

But, then we'll create the FOMO blog, where Jason will post 'Here's the complete list of my birthday drawings I created this month!' Then, people will see the sketches and say "God, I'd love this.'

Communities that have been built can be found across all kinds of sizes. You can even send birthday cards to those who love cars.
