Photographs in black and white - The CreativeMindClass Blog
We inquired with Titika about the key to creating her mysterious black and white photographs
"My name is Titika Rotkjaer, I'm an artist hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark. Following my studies in communication in Roskilde University, Denmark, I relocated to Norway to study visual art, first in the Oslo National Academy of the Arts then in Bergen, where I finished my study in visual arts in the Bergen Academy of Art and Design and earned an MA in Textile Art. There is no formal training in photography. My knowledge about photography and editing comes from continuous education on my own.
Do you want to know about my style? Would I like to discuss the way I express myself rather than style? I don't think of style... Telling stories from an intimate and poetic perspective Each image is a result of my work intensively in determining mood, expression and the mood. Developing how my images appear is a process. My goal is always to improve and clear the meaning. Sometimes , I edit old photos if I gain new knowledge that enables me to come closer to the expression I wanted to create.
The key to making the mysterious images I have created ...? For the majority of my photos - made over the last four years - I have been looking at the complexity and sense of self with a special interest in the connection between the inner and external worlds. Some of my photographs - but not all - are constructed digitally of several pictures (all are, naturally, shot by myself).
My process typically starts with an interest or a curiosity to explore a theme or an array of emotions. I take pictures, make notes, read and gain additional knowledge. Then I take another shot. Making use of the photos often will lead me to create an entirely new image from many others. I work experimentally, subjectively as well as intuitively with the theme to let my images develop. I don't have a clear vision of the end result in my mind's eye and then shoot the elements to construct it."
