Painting and installation work - The CreativeMindClass Blog
Nicole Mueller is an artist from San Francisco. Her works include large-scale painting as well as murals and installations that mimic the effects of stained glass. Driven by process these abstract paintings are highly saturated, built by layers of collage-like forms. Her work explores the complexity of colors, states of flux, dichotomies within painting, the transitional nature of the human condition, and the threshold between external and interior, and between both tangible and intangible.
About my background
I'm primarily a painter, being a full-time artist in San Francisco, California.
My experience also covers painting murals, installation work and being involved in the field of arts administration and career advancement.
I was a student in the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) located in Baltimore in Maryland, where I resided for several years before moving out towards West Coast.
A significant portion of my job and purpose is hosting Beyond the Studio with co-artist Amanda Adams, a podcast which aims to improve visibility in the world of art by conducting interviews with contemporary artists on their careers paths.
About my style
The majority of my work has been unintentional, driven by process, abstract, extremely saturated, constructed with layers of color and colors of collage-like shapes.
I make large-scale paintings, light-activated window installations which mimic the effect of stained glass as well as murals. Through this series, I'm exploring dichotomies, state of flux and the boundary between outside and inside, the tangible and the intangible.
About the key to making my work
I think that showing up regularly to your job is crucial. For me making a habit of studio work and setting goals for myself to continue moving forward allowed me to focus on my work when life gets in my way. It also helps in taking the time to slow down and take a break or rest (for days up to a month or perhaps for a longer period of time).
