News: US Court warns Google that major changes will be Imperative to Illegal Play Store Monopoly -
U.S. District Judge James Donato has warned Google that it must make major changes to be made to its Android application store following an appeals court ruled that the Play Store functions as an illegal monopoly.
According to the Associated Press reports that Judge Donato has suggested that he could ask Google to permit other app stores to be used on Android devices. It's a move which aims to limit Google's control over the distribution of apps and its charging for its services. The control monopoly "nearly complete control" generates billions annually for Google and the court's decision might alter that, with Google anticipating costs as high as 600 millions of dollars.
Google is worried about the possibility that opening it to open the Play Store to third-party app stores could expose users to security risks, which could lead to the issue that Google calls "security disorder. " In spite of these fears, Judge Donato stressed that there is a need for an extensive overhaul, stating, "We are going to take down the walls; that is going to take place."
The case falls under the larger antitrust effort against Google and another important instance involving its search engine scheduled to begin in September. The judge is expected to issue an order that outlines what changes will be required to the Play Store soon, possibly within the week before Labor Day.
A piece in The Verge on the same subject provides a list of Epic Games that are benefitting from these results as well, with an introduction to the article which states "Judge James Donato will issue his final ruling on the information Google gives -- and what Epic gets in just days."
