Motion and space in illustration The CreativeMindClass Blog

Mar 16, 2022

Ever since as a young child I've always loved drawing, paint, and work with my hands. It was and always has been the most natural way to express myself. However, growing as a child in Taiwan and in Taiwan, having an artistic profession was considered a snub, and I was often told by adults to study more practical subjects, or else I'll end in the streets starving to death.

My mom has always encouraged me to do whatever I desired and has done everything that she could to help me achieve my objectives. When I returned in the United States and graduating high school, I realized that I would like to pursue art as profession.

I was accepted to ArtCenter College of design, where I studied Illustration, with the goal of moving into feature animation. But along the way, I discovered motion graphics and fell in love with its versatility and all the incredible work done by those I respect.

What would you say about your personal style?

It's still a long path to finding the style I am able to confidently call my unique. I am prone to be drawn to trying new things every so often... For instance, one month, I'll be drawn to doing something very vibrant, and then I'll try my hand at more naturalistic colors; I'll get really into a car style for a few months but then one day I'll be tired of it and want to try something that's more inspired by lines.

Or sometimes I'll try to blend two different things that are intriguing to me, as if I'm on the endless journey of discovery and learn. However, after experimenting a in a few places, I'm noticing that there are certain shapes, colors, compositions I'm attracted to. Maybe this is the start of a design style?

That's a big reason why I love working for Oddfellows Sometimes I cannot believe that I'm fortunate enough to be working with a team of insanely talented individuals. In the workplace, we are often required to adjust to various styles from project to project, almost every project is done in different styles, and I'm constantly getting new knowledge from my coworkers every day.

What are the most important things to consider when creating your illustration?

I love to draw illustrations on subjects that I am intrigued or curious in, then try to make my own interpretation of it.

Most importantly, I love to have fun. I think having fun is essential to creating something that viewers are able to see whether a person had enjoyment performing some thing... that extra sparkle.
