U.S. District Judge James Donato has issued a warning to Google that major changes will be made to its Android application store following an investigation by a jury found that the Play Store was operating as an illegal monopoly.

The Associated Press reports that Judge Donato has suggested that he might demand Google to let alternative stores for apps on Android devices. This is aimed at reducing Google's dominance over the distribution of apps and its billing through its platform. This monopoly with "nearly complete control" generates billions annually for Google however, this court's ruling could alter this process, with Google forecasting potential expenses as high as 600 million dollars.

Google has expressed concerns regarding the fact that opening up to open the Play Store to third-party app stores may expose customers to security risks, leading to what the company describes as "security disorder." Despite these worries Judge Donato stressed the need for a significant change, saying, "We are going to take down the barriers and it's going to happen."

This is part of an antitrust campaign that is broader than Google and another important case regarding its search engine scheduled to start in September. The judge hopes to give an order outlining the necessary changes needed in the Play Store soon, possibly prior to Labor Day.

The article in The Verge on the same subject highlights Epic Games benefiting from these outcomes, and also includes a an introduction to the article that reads "Judge James Donato will issue his final decision on what Google provides -- and what Epic receives within a matter of days."
