Honoring History, Empowering the Future: International Women's Day 2024
On the 8th day of March everyone gathers for the celebration of International Women's Day (IWD). It's a day to acknowledge the remarkable achievements made by women, consider the obstacles they face and commit ourselves to building a future where women are treated equally. We know that the day wasn't born overnight. It's a culmination of decades of battle, perseverance and unwavering commitment. Today, we honor this day, and invite everyone to join us as we go on short journey through the rich history of IWD which is a proof of the continuing effectiveness of collective action.
Beginning with Seeds of Change to a global Movement
The seeds for IWD were sown in the early 20th century. This was the time when the fight for women's rights gained momentum. On March 8 of 1857, a group of women took to the streets in protest against low working conditions and a lack of protections for women within their trade of clothing. This strike called for a shorter work day and fair living wages. Years later in 1908 on March 8th an organized march by female working in the needle trades was organized in protest of child labor, the conditions of work in sweatshops and to demand that women be able to vote. In 1910, two years after the march, March 8th became annually observed as International Women's Day.
A catalyst for change
Through the 20th century IWD was a powerful force for positive changes. It became a platform where women could raise their voices in the areas of voting rights, fair working conditions and wages, as well as access to education. In 1975, the United Nations officially recognized IWD and affirmed its significance across the globe.
A Day of Celebration and Action
Today, IWD is celebrated in many ways, from inspiring marches to intimate gatherings. It's a time to recognize trailblazing women in every field, from scientists and artists to activists and entrepreneurs. It's important to remember that IWD isn't only an opportunity to celebrate, but an opportunity to take action. It highlights that the struggle to achieve gender equality is far from over. The fight must be continued to push for equal opportunities, challenge damaging stereotypes, and support girls and women everywhere. The main theme of International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women to accelerate progress" using the widely popular hashtag #InvestInWomen..
As per the UN, these five aspects are essential to push ahead this hashtag until it becomes obsolete:
- Investing in women, an issue of human rights:Time is running out. Equal gender representation is the biggest human rights issue, affecting all.
- Stopping poverty Because of the COVID pandemic and conflicts over the last 75 million people have fallen into severe in poverty as of 2020. It is imperative to take immediate action for preventing more than 342 million women and children being in extreme poverty by 2030.
- Implementing gender-responsive financing: Conflicts and rising prices could force 75% of the countries to cut public spending until 2025. This will negatively impact women as well as their most essential services.
- Shifting to a sustainable economy and a care societyThe present economic system significantly impacts women. Proponents of a change to a green economy and care society to amplify women's voices.
- Supporting feminist change-makers: Despite leading efforts female-led organizations are receiving only 0.13% of official aid to development.
Beyond the Day
While IWD is a significant date, the goal of gender equality should not be limited to a single date. Since we're a business founded on inclusivity and empowerment, we strive to create a space where women can thrive throughout the time. Whether it's fostering a culture that values respect and professional growth or supporting organizations that promote women's rights, we're committed to being a part in the solutions.
Together, let's take time to celebrate the tales of the past, embrace the achievements made and work towards a future where every woman has the chance to reach her full potential. Take the time to select some of these activities to be part of this year:
