Abstract and bold geometric illustrations: imaginary drawings deeply rooted in graffiti art by Marc David Spengler

An integral part of creating geometric illustrations is the anticipation of unforeseen outcome. Marc insists that each shape and colour selection is an impulsive reaction to the shape and colour already drawn. Optical illusions, fake shadows changing from flatness to dimensions, all seemingly basic aspects - when exhibited in the Ampersand Gallery in Portland last year, they mesmerised the viewer.

  • Imagine what's on the inside.
  • Don't overload it by adding too many details.
  • Use the parameter you have been given.

"My Name is Marc David Spengler, I'm 25 years old I live in a suburb of Stuttgart, Germany. From the time I was a child, I've always been drawing lots. When I was in the fifth grade, I made a note my dream job was to become a car designer. A little bit later at the age of 12, I discovered the art of graffiti which has been an enormous inspiration source for me for the rest of my life.

Why do artists use geometric forms?

It's not my turn to be an artist doing real graffiti in the present however I'm still observing geometric shapes every day through social media, magazines and even books. As I completed my schooling in 2014, I began studying in communication design in the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where I'm still studying today in the class taught by Patrick Thomas.

Apart from my studies, I'm working on exhibitions, brand collaborations, and my sketchbooks. When it comes to my illustrations, I'm mostly working on abstract geometric patterns and vibrant colour palettes that are attempting to be balanced in an undefined frame. My goal for every composition that I'm working on is to create the illusion of harmony.

How do you create geometric art?

In order to create geometric art I'm not doing an initial pencil sketch, so a lot of my sketches are fictitious. I like to start working on the outside by creating a silhouette of the background, before imagining what could be within. Therefore, I'm always reacting to the shapes I've drawn previously, which makes it very interesting to me because I don't even know what the final result will look when it's finished.

I like making smaller geometric designs because I get a better overview of the design and I am less likely to overload it by adding too many details. While drawing, I like playing with parameterslike creating the illusion of shadows or an optical illusion as everything is possible within the 2-dimensional realm."
