Custom-designed and frequently hand-crafted top hats, masks, crowns, butterfly wings and paintings for backdrops. macro techniques to capture the details that are inspired by vintage noir films of the 1940s and 1930s. A lot of time and deliberation go into every fine art photograph of the gifted Italian photographer Giulia Valente.

We have asked Giulia what her secret to making her fine art photography was. This is her tale.

"I completed my degree from Padua University with degrees in music, art, and Theatre in 2006. I've always been captivated to art. One aspect I like when I live in Italy is the fact that art is everywhere. It's easy to draw inspiration.

My style can be defined as fine-art photography. I can see a connection between painting and photography. In some ways photography is like painting's younger sister. Photographs, not just paintings is my primary sources when I'm planning-to-shoot and retouch an upcoming project."

"Giovanni Gastel," the recent deceased Italian photographer, once said that you have to trash 10,000 good ideas prior to picking the one that is right for you. I try, in my own way to implement this method. In fact, I have many ideas in my journal, sketches, notes, and ideas that will likely to remain on paper forever.

The primary step in creating a new idea is planning. Pre-production is vital to decide, define and focus on the idea, then create drawings, and collect items/props... This can be an extremely long and stressful process due to the fact that the photography that is required requires a lot of attention or even an obsession in the finer details, the things you don't immediately notice, but that will make a huge impact."

The Caterpillar (from "Wonderland" series): year 2021. Model: Ilaria Fracasso. Dress Blue Lady Couture. Hat: Bizarre Noir. Photo, concept, styling, set, hair, makeup: Giulia Valente

What were the keys to making those caterpillar pictures?

"In the particular situation in this Caterpillar project, I tried to define the features that distinguish the person, which make him easily identifiable. These include the color blue and the hookah smokes, his wings when he turns into a butterfly, and also the attitude - a bit conceited and vain. In the end, I wanted to connect all of these features togetherand re-create the overall design I imagined.

On May 3, 2021 the exhibition featuring my chosen artworks was opened in the Laboratorio Cardin(Padua, Italy). I am very excited and grateful for this being my first exhibition."

More of the artist's fine art photographs, rooted in Italian and Flemish paintings of both the XV and XVI centuries are available on her Instagram as well as her Website.
