When I'm free I enjoy doing 30 minutes- 1 hour study or explorations, where I can do whatever want to do during the day. Doing this has helped me grow, but it also helped find which things I enjoyed.
Today, I am able to concentrate on the color of light as well as how to convey textures in a simple way so that I don't need to be too detailed with everything. My preference is to keep my shapes very close to the real world however, in the future I'm hoping to push shapes more and become more artistic with my artwork.
If I begin a painting, usually I prefer to sketch out the basic shapes at first, whether in BW or straight in colors. If I feel it's necessary, I start with linework initially. After I've established a good foundation, I prefer to draw into the light shapes as well as shadow shapes on separate layers. Then, I draw or paint it generally moving from large to the smallest of specifics.
For Streets of London painting I employed a similar method. To create clear edges and to keep the painting well-organized, I employed a large number of layers. I also put the primary light in another layer.
Layers also help me less worried about making mistakes. But once I feel comfortable with where I'm at with the painting I start merging a few things, only keeping the things I consider essential.
For me, colours are an "feel" aspect, and I go with those that feel right. Also, I have a number of reference sources that I look at to assist me in choosing the right colours, sometimes I mix references and sometimes I just use just one.
It's definitely a good idea to learn about the theory of light and colour, to know the limits you can do to make your general colour scheme and value better.
I think it's difficult for me to say what the key to making my work... I like to experiment with various styles, media as well as subject matter and be inspired by other artists.
It's still early on my journey as an artist and continue to try to determine who I am as an artist and what my style is. The main difference these days is I don't have to think about it as much I used to and I think that's making a lot of difference.
