Digital illustration process - The CreativeMindClass Blog

When I'm free I enjoy doing 30 minutes- 1 hour study or explorations, where I do what I feel like the day. This was a huge help in my development, however it also made me realize which things I liked.

Nowadays, I like to concentrate on color, light, as well as how to convey things in a way that is simple so that I do not have to go overboard on every aspect. My preference is to keep my shapes very close to the real world, but going forward I'm hoping to make shapes move further and become more artistic with my art.

If I begin a painting, generally speaking, I prefer to sketch out the basic shapes initially, either using BW or straight in colors. If I think it's essential, I start with linework first. After I've established a good foundation, I prefer to draw in the light shapes and shadows on layers. Not until then do I begin to create or render the image generally moving from large to small particulars.

For Streets of London painting I employed a similar method. To create neat edges and keep everything neat, I made use of a number of layers and also had the main light on another layer.

Layers also help me less worried about making mistakes. However, when I'm comfortable in the state of the work, I'll begin merging a few aspects, while keeping only the things I consider essential.

Colors to me are much a "feel" aspect, and I simply go with what feels right. There are a variety of references I consult for help in choosing the right colours, sometimes I blend references but others I use only just one.

It's certainly a smart idea to study the theory of light and colour, so you know what you can push to make the global color palette and the values better.

I think it's difficult for me to say what the secret to creating my art... I like to experiment with various styles, media and subject matters and get in the spirit of others artists.

It's still early on my art journey and continue to try to figure out my identity as an artist, and what kind of style I have. One of the main differences nowadays is that I don't think about it as much as I used to and I'm sure that's making an enormous difference.
