8 Metrics That Every Course Creator Must be tracking 8 Metrics Every Course Creator Needs to Track

Sep 1, 2022

Course creators are always looking for methods to enhance their course. One of the best ways to achieve this is to listen to your students.

Of course, the problem is that a lot of your learners won't always be able to tell you what's happening in your course. Some will leave the course, cancel their account, or even complete the class and then disappear which means you'll never get the whole story.

Tracking online course metrics helps you determine what learners have to say about your class and what you can do to enhance it.

There's more to metrics than counting the number of students who complete a course. A course isn't guaranteed to have an exact completion when life intervenes or the learner's reasons or conditions change.

We'll look at eight online course metrics that you ought to be keeping track of and the best way you can use the data to improve performance.

Learning Performance and Progress

      Metric 1: Course Progression

On a basic level those who are able to complete your course at a good speed are probably enthusiastic and involved. That could indicate strong course design that you can duplicate or show to other students.

While monitoring course progress Be sure to ask these concerns:

  • What is the time it takes for an individual to finish a course?
  • What speed do they move through each subject and lesson?
  • Which concepts are easy to grasp but which are difficult?
  • If they are consistently dragging the course, what can I do to clarify the issue?

Learner Satisfaction And Approval

      Metric 2: Surveys at exit

The fact that a student has completed a course doesn't mean they loved the experience. You might want to send out a survey after a course has ended (and when learners understand that their feedback won't affect the final grade.) A quick exit survey can capture initial impressions.

      Metric 3: Class evaluations

      Metric 4: Instructor's efficacy

Even the best instructors might fail to deliver an online class. Be sure to observe how instructors react to student requests, and also the way they communicate with your students. This is crucial to monitor if instructors change however, not the content of the course. Do you notice a change in student engagement?

Metric 5, Discussions, comments and discussions

Online discussion threads can be a fantastic way for students to study materials together, and to feel an atmosphere of belonging. Check group discussions for what learners are discussing and engaging with the subject. A certain level of engagement on the board of discussion could be validating!

Learner Competency And Proficiency

      Metric 6: Quiz Scores

Metric 7 Quality of Assignment Submissions

The quality and depth of the assignments can help you to get an idea of how students are engaged with the course. If you can, provide learners personal feedback on each assignment (or review the feedback that an instructor leaves). This will help you determine what students have to overcome. It could also result in higher success rates (and reviews!) for learners who have individual needs.

      Metric 8. Certifications and Retakes

How long will learners remain enrolled in your course, and are they returning for more? How many finish the course and receive a certificate, or how many need to retake the final test? A high rate of completion is an easy statistic you can monitor without having your learners to give you an explicit assessment.

Does your LMS Offer Metrics that can be customized?

  • See a snapshot of enrollment and pending assignments at the time you sign in
  • Track student progress in real time and track how students move between classes and keep an eye on test scores
  • Control assignments through approving or removing assignments
  • Run advanced reports and export the course information to a CSV or Excel file
